Tired of having to share the big screen on game nights? Looking for an oasis that you can retreat to from time to time and just let loose? Why not consider investing a little money and energy into a man cave?
Man caves can be a great addition to the home and allows the guys in the house their own space to be… well, guys. Watching sports, drinking a few beers, or even playing a game of pool can all be done in their own private space (and keep the associated paraphernalia and mess from getting underfoot elsewhere in the home). So how can you create the perfect space to do all the things that guys do?
Below are a few suggestions on how to get started.
Check Your Budget
When it comes to home improvement projects, it can be fairly easy to go over budget pretty quickly. Therefore, the first thing you want to do is sit down and determine exactly how much you’re willing to spend on the ultimate man cave. In order to do this, it may first be feasible to determine what types of things you want to include in the space. Are you interested in adding a bar, entertainment center, a big screen television, a pool or air hockey table? All of this will give you an idea of how much you might spend on the room.
Choose the Ideal Location
Now you want to determine exactly where in the house you’re going to create this ultimate man cave. Assess the space you have available in the home to determine which area makes the most sense. Ideally, the man cave is usually created in the den or basement area as it is the most excluded part of the house. However, you could also create it in a spare room or the garage.
Choosing Design Features
Once you’ve determined where you’re going to start creating your man cave the next thing you want to do is consider the design features for the space. When doing this, consider your personality (or your guy’s personality if you are creating the man cave for your partner). Are you more into sports, music, video games, or the arts? This will determine what types of things should be put in the cave. Having a theme makes it a lot easier to begin shopping for things to fill up the room. Below are a few theme suggestions:
· Sports Themes
If you (or your guy) are into sports, then going with a sports theme is the best idea. You can paint the room the colors of your (his) favorite sports team and even hang up posters to match. You can incorporate things like a pool table, dartboard, or even a poker table as the focal point of the room. You’re probably also going to want to install a big screen television so he doesn’t miss any of his favorite games on TV.
· Musician/Artistic Themes
If you (or your guy) are more interested in music and/or the arts, there are plenty of ways to spruce up the man cave. Instruments can be placed in display cases and hung around the room, add inspiring paintings as wall art, or even install a high quality sound system for quality sounding music. (If you’re going to install a home stereo system, chances are you’re going to want to sound proof the room to prevent the noise from making its way throughout the entire house.)
· Gamer Themes
If you (or your guy) are interested in video games than you can create the ultimate gamer room. Setting up an entertainment system with plenty of shelf space is ideal. This will provide a platform to place the gaming console, controllers, attachments, and games. Investing in a nice gamer chair with bluetooth capabilities is also a great addition. Adding in a bit of surround sound would be nice as well so that they get the full gaming experience.
Creating the ultimate man cave does not have to be long and drawn out, nor does it have to break your budget. By assessing your finances, determining the things you want to place in the room, selecting a location, and creating a theme, you’re sure to create a space that any guy would love to retreat to (or be relegated to!) from time to time. Have fun being creative, and if you’re ever unsure of how to install something (for instance electrical wiring for surround sound or stereo systems), it’s always best to consult with an expert contractor to avoid home improvement disasters.
